10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Your photos last forever. These 10 questions will help you find a photographer who truly understands your day — before you sign anything.

10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Your wedding photos are the one thing that genuinely lasts forever. The flowers will wilt, the cake will be eaten, and the dress will go into storage — but your photos will be looked at for decades. Don't leave this hire to chance. Here are the ten questions every couple should ask before signing a contract.

1. Are you available on our date?

Always confirm availability first. There's no point going further if the answer is no. Also ask whether they have any other bookings that day — some photographers shoot multiple events and you want to know upfront.

2. Can we see a full wedding gallery?

Highlight reels are curated to show only the best 30 images. Ask to see an entire wedding from start to finish. This reveals how they handle the slow moments, the low-light reception, the awkward family photos. Those are the real test.

3. What's your backup plan if you're ill or injured?

This happens. Equipment fails, emergencies arise. A professional always has an answer: a trusted second shooter, a network of colleagues, a clear plan. If they hesitate, that's concerning.

4. How do you handle low light?

Evening receptions, candlelit ceremonies, and moody interiors are where technical skill separates good photographers from great ones. Ask to see examples from similar lighting conditions to your venue.

5. How many edited photos will we receive?

Industry standard for a full-day wedding is 400 to 800 images. Know what you're getting. Also ask about the delivery format and whether you get full printing rights.

6. What is the turnaround time for the final gallery?

Standard delivery is 6 to 12 weeks after the wedding. Longer than that warrants a conversation. Ask about sneak peeks too — many photographers share a handful within 48 hours.

7. Will you bring a second shooter?

Two photographers mean no missed moments. While the lead captures the bride walking down the aisle, the second is on the groom's face. Ask whether a second shooter is included or costs extra.

8. What are your payment, rescheduling, and cancellation terms?

Read this carefully before signing anything. Understand the deposit amount, payment schedule, and what happens if you need to change the date. No exceptions.

9. Have you shot at our venue before?

Familiarity with a venue is a meaningful advantage. They'll know where the best natural light falls, which backdrops work, and how to navigate any restrictions. If they haven't been there, ask if they'll do a site visit.

10. Can we meet before booking?

You'll spend 8 to 10 hours with this person on one of the most emotionally charged days of your life. Chemistry matters. If a meeting feels awkward or forced, that will show up in the photos.

The right photographer doesn't just capture your day — they understand it. Take your time with this hire.
